A friend and I were recently speculating as to why many people choose to talk more often than they choose to listen. It could be an attempt to show empathy for the other person by telling our own similar stories, or it could be a way to compensate for wanting to help but not knowing quite how.
Both of those reasons, however, are ego-based. When someone wants to talk the best way to help them is to put our ego aside and let them talk. Talking is a cathartic process for many people, and often just the act of “getting it out” helps them feel better.
Next time someone starts telling you a story, just listen. It will be one of the most precious gifts you can give them.
